Why did you choose to use JASS?

JASS is part of our Health and Well-being curriculum framework for our pupils to gain the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for life in the 21st century. Our Curriculum for Excellence has four fundamental capacities; JASS meets these capacities for our children to become Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens, and Effective Contributors.

What were the hoped outcomes of your initiative?

To offer our pupils a structure to facilitate the four capacities of our Curriculum for Excellence as part of our Universal Offer to all pupils.

Can you provide some examples for the activities that the young people did for the award? It would be helpful if you could note any activities that you or any partner took the lead on.

Me and My World:

Knitted Poppies to contribute to the poppy display at the town’s War Memorial on Remembrance Day.

My Interests:

Science exploration, chemical reactions.

Get Active, Stay Active:

Survival around water: first aid and rescue in, and around water.

Was there any additional costs over and above the purchase of the folders?

Materials for arts and crafts, science and cooking

Do you have any examples of how a young person grew in confidence as a result of doing the activities in JASS?

Being able to follow passions and interests in school, and having personal choice in their learning activities was very effective in building the confidence of our young people.

Contributing to our school and local community was empowering and our young people feel valued.

What were the benefits to your organisation taking the lead on this? What went well? Did you reach your outcomes?

It gives our teachers and pupils a streamlined structure to achieve our outcomes and goals.

Was there anything that didn’t go well?

Being able to staff each group was challenging. The groups were more effective when they were smaller numbers.

The boxes on the forms were a little small for some children.
